Former Deputy Governors seek national reorientation, citizens’ collaboration to tackle Nigeria’s challenges

The Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria has called for urgent national reorientation and stronger collaboration between leaders and citizens to address the country’s growing socio-political challenges and drive sustainable development.

The appeal was made on Friday in Abuja after a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. The forum briefed the former president on preparations for its 5th Annual Conference scheduled for October.

Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman of the Forum, Dr. Chris Akomas, said leadership goes beyond those in government, noting that every Nigerian has a role in nation-building.

He stressed that leadership begins at home, in communities, and across all levels of society, urging citizens to work together to close leadership gaps and contribute to national progress.

Dr. Akomas also disclosed that recommendations from previous editions of the forum’s conference have influenced public policy. He cited the Federal Government’s recent distribution of hybrid cocoa seedlings as one of the forum’s earlier proposals that has been implemented.

Addressing the nation’s security challenges and political tensions, the forum urged Nigerians to remain united and embrace peaceful coexistence.

“Despite our differences, Nigerians must continue to look out for one another. Unity and collective responsibility remain essential for building a stronger nation,” Dr. Akomas said.

The forum also commended former President Jonathan for his continued support as Grand Patron and expressed confidence that the October conference would produce practical recommendations to strengthen nation-building and sustainable development.

The 2025 conference is themed: “Rethinking Nation Building: Bridging the Leadership-Citizen Disconnect Through Culture, Orientation, Character and Tradition for Sustainable Development.”

According to Dr. Akomas, the conference will bring together stakeholders from various sectors to examine the growing disconnect between leaders and citizens, and develop practical solutions to improve governance, rebuild public trust, and foster sustainable national development.
