Arochukwu Renaissance: 5 Days of Culture, Faith and Vision as Eze Aro IX Marks 2nd Coronation Anniversary
Glamour and splendour alone do not adequately describe the second coronation anniversary of His Eminence, Eze Dr Eberechukwu Oji, Eze Aro IX of Arochukwu Kingdom, held from July 22 to July 26, 2026.
Peace, unity and excitement defined the five-day celebration, as the people of Arochukwu Kingdom came together to commemorate two years of measurable and intentional development under the reign of their monarch. The vision of “Light Up Aro” has gone beyond a metaphor, becoming a visible reality across every nook and cranny of the kingdom.
Day One: A Call for Righteousness and Compassion
The celebrations commenced with an open-air crusade, during which His Eminence urged the people of Arochukwu Kingdom to shun immoral behaviour and all forms of negative vices capable of tarnishing the image of the kingdom.
He said it would be unfortunate for any son or daughter of Arochukwu to be found among those bringing dishonour to Abia State or Nigeria.
While applauding the achievements of Governor Dr. Alex Otti, particularly in road construction, the rehabilitation of the long-neglected Arochukwu General Hospital, and other developmental projects across Abia State, the monarch reminded the people that Governor Otti, as a son of the soil, had fulfilled his mandate and urged residents to support efforts that would sustain the progress.
A free medical outreach also formed part of the day’s activities, providing healthcare services to residents of Arochukwu Kingdom and neighbouring communities.
Speaking during the outreach, Nurse Favour Chidinma Nwaka explained that the programme was organised alongside the anniversary crusade to offer free medical consultations, treatment and medications.
According to her, patients were first examined by doctors before receiving nursing care and prescribed medications at no cost.
“Today, we are holding the medical outreach alongside the crusade. Patients first see the doctors, after which the nurses attend to them, and they are given free medications. It is our way of giving back to the people of Arochukwu.”
She noted that beneficiaries came from across Arochukwu Kingdom and neighbouring communities, including Ihechiowa and Ututu, stressing that the outreach was open to everyone without discrimination.
Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Barrister Kingsley Uba Okoro, described the annual celebration as a deliberate effort to showcase the rebirth, unity and development of the ancient kingdom.
He explained that the anniversary, themed “Aro Renaissance: Consolidating Gains in Peace and Unity, Honouring the Legacies of Mary Slessor in the Evangelisation and Social Development of Aro Kingdom,” was designed to project the renewed image of Arochukwu and demonstrate to Nigeria and the international community that the kingdom had regained its pride.
“Our kingdom is back on its feet once again,” he said, noting that the reign of Eze Aro IX has ushered in visible development and renewed hope.
Day Two: Preserving History, Celebrating Heritage
The second day witnessed the commissioning of the rebuilt Mary Slessor Library in Amannagwu, Arochukwu.
His Eminence announced that a section of the library would be dedicated to the Committee on Historical and Cultural Development of Arochukwu, chaired by Professor Okoro Ijoma, to preserve artefacts excavated from three compounds in Ugwuakuma by archaeologist Osinachi Nwosu and his team.
The artefacts, including brass items, pot sherds, beads, smoking pipes, gun flints, china wares, ceramic lamps, kerosene lanterns, gin bottles, bracelets and several other historical objects, provide evidence of wealth, trade activities and household life during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and legitimate trade periods.
The monarch appreciated Dr. Mrs. Nwanganga Shields for funding the library project and expressed optimism that it would be fully equipped before the end of 2026.
Later at the anniversary lecture and dinner held at Alpha Plus Hotel, Amuvi, Eze Aro IX announced plans to establish the Alex Ekubo Film Village in honour of the late Nollywood actor.
According to him, the film village would preserve the actor’s legacy while serving as a training centre for aspiring actors.
The monarch also urged parents to preserve Aro traditions by teaching their children proper cultural values, including the significance of the kola nut ceremony, the wearing of Omu Aro regalia and giving children authentic Aro names.
He announced an essay competition in Igbo Aro, with the winner to receive a prize of 1,000 US dollars, while also revealing that the famous Uda Nkwa would, for the first time, be performed live in the United States.
The event also featured reviews of his internationally acclaimed lecture delivered at the University of California, Berkeley, titled “Reclaiming African Civilizational Voices: The Arochukwu Renaissance and the Future of Indigenous Knowledge in a Global Information Age.”
Reviewers praised the lecture for placing Arochukwu on the global intellectual map and advancing conversations on indigenous governance, African languages, digital preservation and cultural diplomacy, while also suggesting greater attention to youth, gender and economic policy.
Day Three: Royal Homage and Youth Development
The third day featured royal homage by representatives of Arochukwu’s 19 villages, Aro citizens in the diaspora, welfare associations and traditional institutions.
The monarch also received members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who appealed for improvements to the dilapidated corps members’ lodge.
Responding immediately, Eze Aro directed his Chief of Staff to investigate ownership of the building to facilitate its rehabilitation.
He also pledged to engage Nzuko Aro Worldwide on the possibility of providing transportation for corps members from the orientation camp to Arochukwu.
Encouraging the corps members, the monarch highlighted the opportunities available in the kingdom, including the newly completed Mary Slessor Library, where ICT and artificial intelligence resources would soon become available through free internet access and improved electricity.
Day Four: A Kingdom Open for Business
The grand finale attracted dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond.
In his address, Eze Aro IX declared that “Arochukwu is open for business,” urging sons and daughters of the kingdom in the diaspora to return home with their investments, expertise and global networks.
He assured women entrepreneurs that they would be among the first beneficiaries of planned SME and cooperative funding schemes while encouraging young people to acquire relevant skills for the kingdom’s emerging economy.
Chairman of the Anniversary Council, Dr. Ernest Azudialu Obiejesi, represented by Barrister Nnaji Igwe, praised the monarch for giving Arochukwu a stronger voice and clear developmental direction.
Barrister Kingsley Uba Okoro described the anniversary as a celebration of peace, unity, visionary leadership and a renewed commitment to progress.
The President-General of Nzuko Aro Worldwide, Mazi Nnadozie Udensi, commended the monarch’s developmental initiatives, while goodwill messages were delivered by traditional rulers, religious leaders and other distinguished guests, including Igwe Chidubem Iweka, Emir Sanusi Mohammed Aisha and representatives of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Representing Governor Alex Otti, the Chief Economic Adviser, Mazi Kanu Ohuche, reaffirmed the Abia State Government’s commitment to supporting development initiatives in Arochukwu.
He applauded the monarch’s efforts in promoting agriculture, education, healthcare, tourism, youth development and security, while revealing that work was underway to transform the Ibom Waterfalls into a major international tourist destination.
Delivering his State of the Kingdom Address titled “A Kingdom Repositioned, A Greatness Reawakened,” Eze Aro unveiled an ambitious blueprint aimed at transforming Arochukwu into a leading economic, educational, cultural and tourism hub.
He highlighted achievements recorded within two years, including strengthened unity, improved security, youth empowerment, healthcare interventions, Operation Light Up Arochukwu, the establishment of the Arochukwu Business Leaders Forum, and strategic engagements with major investors.
He also unveiled the Aro Renaissance Prosperity Agenda, which includes the Aro Development Master Plan (Aro Depth 2050), a national Aro database, investment in mining, manufacturing, tourism, gas utilisation and the transformation of iconic sites such as the Long Juju Caves, the 79 Steps and Aro Waterfalls into world-class tourism destinations.
Concluding his address, the monarch announced that the third coronation anniversary in 2027 would be celebrated as a Grand Homecoming, inviting Aro sons and daughters from around the world to return home and celebrate the kingdom’s continuing renaissance.
Day Five: Thanksgiving and Reflection
The celebrations concluded with a thanksgiving service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Amannagwu, Arochukwu.
During the service, His Eminence dismissed the false prophecies that surrounded his ascension to the throne and thanked God for preserving him through two successful years of reign.
Preaching on the theme, “The Throne of Gratitude,” drawn from Hebrews 4:16 and Psalm 100:4, Pastor Sunday Nwazue described thanksgiving as the key that opens the gate to God’s presence, attracts mercy and releases divine favour.
Quoting Psalm 118, Eze Ibom Isii, Mazi Amos Egbu Okoro, testified to God’s faithfulness despite the battles encountered, while Professor Okoro Ijoma thanked God for His protection throughout the celebrations and applauded the monarch’s vision for Arochukwu Kingdom.
The service climaxed with the presentation of gifts to His Eminence by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Amannagwu, alongside prayers for continued wisdom, peace and prosperity throughout his reign.
Though the celebration has come to an end, it leaves a lasting impression that Arochukwu Kingdom is not only experiencing a renaissance but is also pursuing a deliberate and intentional path toward rebuilding its heritage, reclaiming its voice and securing a prosperous future for generations to come.
