Hold government accountable, don’t be a campaign instrument- Abia PDP guber candidate tells journalists

The Abia State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2027 general election, Dr. Kelechi Anosike, has talked journalists to hold government accountable, rather serving as campaign instrument-.

He also described the media as a critical stakeholder in democratic governance rather than a campaign instrument for politicians.

Anosike stated this while addressing journalists and other stakeholders on Thursday in Umuahia the state capital.

He stressed that the primary responsibility of government should be the welfare and wellbeing of the people.

According to him, the media plays a crucial role in strengthening democracy by ensuring accountability and keeping the government responsive to the needs of the citizens.

“I personally believe that the media is not a campaign instrument for politicians, but I see them more as critical stakeholders and partners in democratic accountability and the welfare of the people,” he said.

The PDP candidate said his approach to governance was anchored on what he described as “welfarism,” arguing that the people must remain at the centre of every government policy and programme.

“In the course of my presentation, I’m more of a welfareist. And as a welfareist, I believe that the whole essence of government is the people. If you remove the people, there is no government,” Anosike said.

He maintained that government derives its relevance from its responsibility to serve the people, adding that leadership should therefore be measured by its impact on the lives and welfare of citizens.

Anosike further emphasised the need for a strong partnership between the media, political actors and other stakeholders to promote transparency, accountability and good governance ahead of the 2027 election.

He said the media should remain independent and committed to informing the public, scrutinising those in authority and ensuring that issues affecting the people receive adequate attention.

The PDP candidate’s remarks came as political activities continue to gather momentum in Abia ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with stakeholders and political parties intensifying engagements with the electorate.
