Coral Football League: Umuosu beat Umuagungolori Obiohuru 2 0 to lift trophy

Team Umuosu on Tuesday defeated team Umuagungolori Obiohuru 2 0 to lift the Coral Football League trophy at Williams Memorial School Afuguri in Umuahia North Local Government Area.

The team obviously saved
their sharpest football for the biggest stage, delivering a composed and commanding display as colour, passion and community pride in the tournament.

 

From the opening whistle, Umuagungolori Obiohuru showed early intent, pressing high and moving the ball with confidence as if eager to seize the initiative.

Their bright start, however, only served to awaken Umuosu. Gradually, the eventual champions settled into their rhythm, tightening their shape, winning the midfield duels and dictating the tempo like a side built for finals.

Once Umuosu found their stride, the contest tilted decisively. Their passing grew crisper, their movement sharper and their intent clearer. Two well taken goals, crafted with patience and finished with conviction, sealed the outcome and underlined their authority on the day. At the blast of the final whistle, Umuosu stood tall as deserved champions, lifting the trophy and the top cash prize of one million naira.

Umuagungolori Obiohuru, gallant but second best on the day, finished runners up and received seven hundred thousand naira, while Umuchukwu Umuekwule claimed third place and a reward of five hundred thousand naira, rounding off a fiercely contested tournament that kept the community buzzing.

Before the presentation of medals and prizes, the sponsor of the competition, Dr Charles Iheanyi Ukeagu, addressed the gathering, explaining that the Coral Football League was organised in honour of his late mother, Elder Mrs Margaret Ukeagu.

He described the tournament as a celebration of football, unity and shared joy, praising the teams for their discipline and entertaining brand of play.

Dr Ukeagu expressed gratitude to the dignitaries who graced the final, including the immediate past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Engr Chinedum Orji, former ASEPA General Manager Chief Eze Okwulehie, Mr Obi Onwuzuruike, Mr Emeka Elias, High Chief Enyinnaya Onyekwere, former member who represented Umuahia North State Constituency Chief Kelechi Onuzuruike, founder of Don FM Radio Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, widely known as Don Lulu, and other distinguished guests.

He announced that the league would become an annual event, with plans to increase prize money in future editions. According to him, the peaceful conduct of players and supporters throughout the competition, without any incidents of violence or disorder, was a source of pride and encouragement. He also commended the organising committee, officials from the NPLF, the referees and the match commissioner, Mr Ukaegbu Jonathan, describing the tournament as a true symbol of unity, brotherhood and oneness in the Afugiri community.

Rt Hon Chinedum Orji, who was assisted by High Chief Enyinnaya Onyekwere during the decoration of the winners, praised Umuosu for scoring what he described as clean and quality goals. He applauded the organisers for their coordination and pledged continued support for the competition, while urging youths to channel their energy into sports and positive pursuits.

Further commendations came from Mr Iheanacho Uchenna, President of the Ohuhu Welfare Union Youth Wing, and Mr Collins Utah. They both praised Dr Ukeagu and other contributors for staging a tournament that brought life, excitement and homecoming joy to the community during the festive period.

They expressed optimism that future editions would grow into an even wider and more competitive football spectacle.

The Most valuable player, Azubike uchechukwu David, best goal keeper, Odinma Stephen Iroatunmere and hghest goal scorer, Ahamefule Chibuike were also recognized and honoured during the event

As the sun set on the community, the Coral Football League final delivered more than a winner. It offered a reminder of football’s power to unite, entertain and inspire, leaving Umuosu crowned champions and Afugiri looking forward to the next chapter.
