Abia Lawmaker tasks Business owners on cleanliness, orders warning for drainage blockage in Umuahia
Corporate organisations operating in Abia State have been urged to maintain clean and healthy work environments and to desilt drainages within their premises to promote public health and prevent flooding.
The call was made by Hon Kalu Mba-Nwoke, Member representing Ohafia South Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, during this month’s environmental sanitation monitoring exercise in Umuahia.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, Mr. Mba-Nwoke also directed the management of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) to urgently open up blocked drainages along the Isi-gate axis and its environs to ensure free flow of water.
The lawmaker expressed concern over poor compliance by some residents and businesses. He ordered that a Financial House located along Owerri Road, by Warri Street, Umuahia, be issued a warning letter for blocking drains and obstructing the free flow of water through its activities in the area.
During monitoring at Owerri Road by Eket Street, the Leader of the Hausa Community in Abia State, Yaro Danladi, was seen on ground mobilizing his members to desilt drainages in the area.
At Orieugba Market the lawmaker directed traders to evacuate waste stuck in drainage systems to prevent water stagnation, flooding, and possible disease outbreaks in the market.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Philemon Ogbonna, represented by the Head of Department, Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Mrs. Happiness Akpulonu, called on all Local Government Council Chairmen to participate actively in the monthly sanitation exercise to achieve a healthier environment.
Hon. Ogbonna further suggested that the government should introduce stronger enforcement measures, including sanctions, for residents who fail to comply with sanitation directives.
The monthly sanitation exercise in Abia continues to emphasize collective responsibility for a cleaner, safer, and flood-free state.
