ASEPA urges Abia residents to bag refuse before disposal

The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has embarked on a sensitization exercise in the major streets, roads and communities of Umuahia, North, South, and Ikwuano Local Government Areas to educate residents on the need to adopt proper refuse disposal attitude.

The agency during the exercise also disclosed that it would soon commence enforcement on the compulsory bagging of waste before disposing them on ASEPA designated buckets.

The Deputy General Manager ASEPA Umuahia zone Mr Ambrose Jonah, who disclosed this on Wednesday, further explained that the exercise which will commence on August 5, will target places like the hotels, hospitals and eateries.

He revealed out that the customized waste bag can be obtained in the ASEPA office or Umuahia, North, South and Ikwuano LGA headquarters.

According to him, the bagging of the waste in different bags such as biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and biomedical bags will enable the agency to sort out the waste properly, pointing out that the initiative is in line with the global best practices.

Jonah advised members of the public to support government efforts and Asepa in sustaining the cleanliness of the state, by ensuring that they obtain the bags and bagged their waste before disposing of them.

He said that the defaulters will be arraigned before the environmental court while stressing the need for people to dispose of their waste between 5pm to 6am approved time daily.
