Ebere Uzoukwa, Ph.D
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has flagged off the reconstruction of two major roads in Umuahia, the state capital, marking a significant milestone in the state’s urbanization and development efforts. The roads, Orpet-Umuafai-Lodu-Ahiaeke Road and Ahiaeke-Okwuta-Bende Road, are expected to be completed within nine months.
In his speech during the flag-off ceremony, Governor Otti emphasized that the roads will support existing businesses and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors. He noted that the reconstruction of the two roads will offer numerous benefits to residents, businesses, and stakeholders, including eased transportation, improved economic activities, and increased employment opportunities.
The governor highlighted his administration’s commitment to transforming Umuahia into a modern city, with a focus on infrastructure development, economic growth, and citizen engagement. He pointed out that the state government has taken bold initiatives to expand the city’s urban corridors through unprecedented investments in social and economic infrastructures.
The reconstruction and expansion of the Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard, and the on-going infrastructure development projects around Library Avenue through Akanu Ibiam Road, demonstrate the administration’s commitment to rapid transformation of Umuahia. The state’s urban mass transit initiative, set to launch soon, will further enhance the state’s transportation system, making it more efficient, safe, and affordable.
The mass transit vehicles, powered by clean energy sources, will be integrated into the Urban Renewal and Public Transport Project, forming the infrastructure backbone for the new intra and inter-city transport regime in Abia. This initiative will promote sustainable development, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air quality.
The reconstruction of the two roads is a testament to Governor Otti’s visionary leadership and his administration’s dedication to transforming Abia State into a hub of economic growth and development. As the state continues on this path of progress, it is clear that the future of Abia State is bright, and that the state is poised to become a model for development and good governance in Nigeria.
There is no gainsaying that the projects will have a positive impact on various sectors, including agriculture, commerce, education, and healthcare. Improved transportation links will enable farmers to transport their produce more efficiently, reduce transportation costs, and increase access to markets, thereby boosting agricultural productivity, improving food security, and enhancing the livelihoods of farmers and their families.
Governor Otti on the other hand urged citizens to support the development efforts through prompt payment of taxes and other statutory levies, emphasizing that the commitment to make Abia great is a collective obligation. He encouraged citizens to fulfill their civic responsibilities and support the development efforts, as the state continues to make progress.
The reconstruction of the two roads in Umuahia undoubtedly underscores another significant milestone in Abia State’s development journey, marking a major step towards transforming the state into a hub of economic growth and development.
Also worthy of note is the governor’s commitment to transparency and accountability which has earned Abia State a reputation as a haven for investors and businesses. The state’s investment climate has been significantly enhanced, with several businesses and investors indicating interest in investing in the state. As the state continues to make progress, it is expected that more businesses and investors will take advantage of the state’s investment-friendly climate, leading to increased economic growth and development.
