The Joint Technical Committee for the 22nd National Sports Festival, Ogun 2024, has announced a revised schedule for the Games, shifting the event to May 16–30, 2025.

The adjustment aims to align the festival with Nigeria’s evolving sports strategies and provide additional time to implement key recommendations from the committee’s technical review.

This decision was confirmed in a communiqué jointly signed by the Director General of the National Sports Commission and Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, Hon. Adebukola Olopade, and the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka.

In the new timeline, zonal eliminations for team sports will take place earlier, from February 23–28, 2025.

The Joint Technical Committee expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its dedication to advancing sports in Nigeria, particularly through the establishment of a specialized Commission for sports management. They also lauded the Ogun State Government and its citizens for their unwavering support, as well as Babcock University and Chief Kunle Soname for their contributions to the festival’s preparation.

Speaking after the meeting, Hon. Olopade emphasized that the new timeline reflects the federal government’s vision of integrating economic sustainability into sports.

“The extra five months will allow us to execute a seamless and innovative festival that showcases our organizational capacity,” he stated.

Among the festival’s highlights is the introduction of the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) initiative, an innovative concept allowing young talents to compete as a symbolic

“38th state.” Hon. Olopade described the program as a groundbreaking step towards nurturing emerging athletes and providing them with exposure at the highest level.

The meeting, held on December 19, 2024, at the Banquet Hall of Mitros Residence and Suites in Abeokuta, Ogun State, included a thorough inspection of proposed venues and facilities for the festival.

A follow-up meeting and inspection visit have been scheduled to ensure all concerns are addressed before the Games.

With the new date in place, stakeholders are optimistic about delivering a festival that not only meets but exceeds expectations, cementing Ogun State’s legacy as a hub for sports excellence in Nigeria.
