Otti: Strengthening GADA, UCDA for Sustainable Urban Renewal
Ebere Uzoukwa, PhD
The Abia State government, under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, has demonstrated a renewed commitment to urban renewal and development in the state. This commitment is evident in the recent appointment of board members for the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) and the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) to make Aba attractive for investment and economic growth while Umuahia wears the aesthetic and befitting face of a state capital.
The infrastructure development initiatives targeted by the governor’s administration largely aim to create opportunities for sustainable socio-economic growth, job creation, and a better life for the people. The government has indeed reconstructed several roads in Aba, including the long-abandoned 6-lane Port Harcourt, Ohanku, and Omuma roads, to improve the city’s infrastructure. Similarly, in Umuahia, the government has initiated various projects to give the city the face of a capital city. These initiatives demonstrate Governor Otti’s commitment to urban renewal and development in Abia State.
The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) has made significant progress in Aba rejuvenation under Governor Alex Chioma Otti’s leadership. GADA has implemented several initiatives aimed at restoring the beauty and socio-economic growth in the famous Enyimba city. These initiatives include developing a 25-year urban master plan for Aba, urban renewal projects, infrastructural development, and flood control and water management. GADA’s achievements speak volumes about the commitment of Governor Otti to delivering results and improving the lives of Aba residents.
One of GADA’s notable achievements is the development of a 25-year urban master plan for Aba, which was done in collaboration with UN-Habitat Urban Lab. This master plan provides a comprehensive framework for the city’s development, ensuring that Aba becomes a hub for economic growth and development. Additionally, GADA has initiated strategic projects in various parts of the city, aimed at restoring the socio-economic vibrancy of Aba.
The Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has also recorded remarkable achievements under Governor Alex Otti’s administration. UCDA has successfully removed shanties and projections in the city centre, made progress on the proposed relocation of Isigate street trading to Afara Relieve Market, and completed the first phase of desilting major gutters in Umuahia. These initiatives reflect the administration’s commitment to improving the aesthetic appeal and functionality of Umuahia Capital City.
The UCDA’s efforts to remove shanties and projections in the city centre have improved the overall appearance of Umuahia, making it a more attractive place for residents, businesses, and investors. The authority’s progress on the relocation of Isigate street trading to Afara Relieve Market is also expected to decongest the city centre and improve the overall business environment.
The recent appointment of board members for GADA and UCDA is a significant step towards achieving the governor’s vision of transforming Abia State. With these appointments, the institutions are strengthened and repositioned to drive the urban renewal program effectively. This is imperative, considering the government’s resolve to create a more business-friendly environment, attract investments, and stimulate economic growth in the state. The impact of these initiatives is equally expected to be far-reaching, with benefits accruing to the people, businesses, and investors alike.
In conclusion, Governor Otti’s renewed push for urban renewal in Abia State is a welcome development. The appointment of board members for GADA and UCDA is not only apt but a crucial step towards achieving the governor’s vision of transforming Abia into a modern model state. With a clear focus on infrastructure development, economic growth, and improved quality of life, the government is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of Abians. As the state continues to progress, it is clear that Governor Otti’s administration is committed to rebuilding Abia State through innovative governance. The future of Abia State looks bright, and the people of Abia are optimistic about the positive changes that these initiatives will bring.
