Otti’s Achievements: Why Abia Opposition Can’t Hide Their Disappointment Ebere Uzoukwa, Ph.D. The Abia State government, led by Governor Alex Otti OFR, has been making tremendous strides in various sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and rural development. Despite these achievements, the opposition remains angry and critical of the governor’s administration. Amid their relentless criticism, Governor Otti remains focused on delivering his campaign promises, transforming Abia State into a hub of economic activities and development. To understand this phenomenon, it’s essential to examine the context and the factors driving their sentiment. For 24 years, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ruled Abia State, leaving behind a legacy of misgovernance, corruption, and underdevelopment. The state was plagued by abject poverty, and its people were reduced to a pitiable situation. However, the election and inauguration of Governor Alex Otti on 29th May, 2023, marked the end of the old order. Governor Otti’s administration has focused on rebuilding Abia State and restoring its lost glory. The governor has demonstrated his commitment to good governance, transparency, and accountability. His administration has embarked on an aggressive road construction and reconstruction program, including the recent flag-off of the Ntigha-Mbawsi-Umuala Road in Isiala Ngwa North and the commissioning of the Dozie Dual Carriage Way, fitted with solar-powered streetlights. Additionally, the renovated, retrofitted, modernized, and well-equipped Nnamdi Azikiwe Secretariat, which was previously abandoned, has been commissioned and will accommodate four Ministries and about 1,000 civil servants. Governor Otti’s administration has also prioritized healthcare delivery, with significant investments in primary healthcare, reduction of maternal and infant mortality, and improvement of healthcare infrastructure. The governor has implemented initiatives to improve and entrench quality education, including investments in primary and secondary school infrastructure, teacher training, and education technology. Furthermore, Governor Otti’s administration is intentional about boosting agricultural productivity, improving rural infrastructure, and enhancing the livelihoods of rural communities. The administration’s commitment to deepening democracy is evident in the successful conduct of local government elections, ensuring that power is devolved to the grassroots level. Despite these achievements, the opposition remains angry and critical of Governor Otti’s administration. Several factors contribute to this sentiment. The opposition is envious of the governor’s achievements and the massive support he receives from Abians. They are afraid that Governor Otti’s administration is exposing their past misdeeds, failures, and corruption. In conclusion, Governor Alex Otti’s administration has made significant strides in rebuilding Abia State and restoring its lost glory. Despite the opposition’s anger and criticism, the governor remains focused and determined to his work. With the support of Abians, Governor Otti will continue to deliver on his promises, ensuring that Abia State becomes a model for development and good governance in Nigeria.
