Peter Obi Officially Defects to ADC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. The announcement was made at a high-profile event in Enugu State, attended by prominent politicians and lawmakers.

Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party banner, stated that his defection to ADC is aimed at transforming Nigeria and combating electoral malpractice in the upcoming elections. He also urged other opposition leaders to unite under a common front, emphasizing the need for collaboration to strengthen democratic governance.

The event drew influential figures including David Mark, ADC National Chairman, and senators such as Enyinnaya Abaribe, Tony Nwoye, Victor Umeh, and Ben Obi. Several former governors and senior political leaders were also present, signaling broad support for the move.

The defection has been preceded by weeks of speculation, with political observers noting that Obi’s decision reflects a broader opposition strategy to consolidate influence outside Nigeria’s two dominant parties.

While Obi’s move has stirred excitement among his supporters, not all members of his former political circle are following suit. Governor Alex Otti of Abia State announced he will remain in the Labour Party to help rebuild it.

Political analysts suggest that Obi’s defection to ADC could reshape Nigeria’s opposition dynamics, potentially altering alliances and strategies as parties gear up for the 2027 presidential elections.
