NEW COMMENDABLE INITIATIVES OF THE OTTI ADMINISTRATION IN ABIA STATE

By Emeka Nwosu, PhD.

A few days ago, the Honourable Commissioner of Information in Abia State, Prince Okey Kanu, at a press briefing, disclosed a number of development projects the Abia State Government has resolved to execute for the good of the people of Abia. Prince Kanu spoke after the weekly meeting of the State Executive Council where several decisions were taken, covering some housing and industrial undertakings.

He informed the press that arrangements and all necessary processes have been concluded to put the recovered site of Abia Hotels and vacated premises of the Civil Service Commission to effective and functional public use. Nothing could be more gladdening than this, considering the fact that these prime public spaces in the heart of Umuahia, the capital city, have been lying idle with no meaningful economic activities taking place in them.

The decision to take over the sites and put up useful projects that would impact positively on the economy of the State is a right step in the right direction. The good people of Abia welcome wholeheartedly such wonderful initiatives. According to Kanu, procurement procedures have already been concluded in respect of these projects with the contractors who won the bids set to commence constructions as soon as possible.

One of the key highlights is the forthcoming flag-off of what is christened ‘Pocket Layout Industrial Estate Project’, a strategic housing initiative aimed at providing functional and affordable homes for Abians. As noted earlier, the project covers two major locations, namely the Old Civil Service Commission headquarters and the former Abia Hotels site. The Commissioner disclosed that the Old Civil Service Commission area has been fully cleared, parceled, and is ready for allocation to contractors, while work is progressing steadily at the former Abia Hotels site, which is expected to be ready for parcelation and allocation within the next two weeks.

The projects, when fully realized, would greatly help in addressing housing shortage in the State, while boosting the infrastructural profile of the capital city of Umuahia. It is important to note that Umuahia has no modern and standard housing estate. The existing one at Ehimiri is nothing to write home about. The housing estate exists only in name. The poorly built estate has no motorable roads and potable drinking water. Amenities that are normally found in planned and organized estates are lacking in the place. For example, there are nothing like recreational facilities, shopping centres, clinics and schools in the estate. It may not be out of place to characterize the Ehimiri estate as a glorified slum.

It is against this background, that the decision of the Otti administration to build a modern and standard housing estates within the designated sites in the city is highly appreciated. The establishment of secure estates with modern and standard facilities would go a long way in boosting the investment profile of the State as investors wishing to invest in the State have an opportunity to enjoy secure and functional accommodation for themselves and their operational staff.

Another heartwarming decision which Prince Kanu communicated to the public was the remarkable revival of the Enyimba Automated Shoe Company and the Enyimba Garments Factory, all in the commercial hub of Aba. According to the Honourable Commissioner, both factories have returned to full production after many decades of dormancy following the strategic reforms introduced by Governor Otti and appointment of a new management team in 2025. These bold efforts have ushered in a new lease of life for the companies and created employment opportunities for the teeming youths in the State.

The factories, understandably, now operate five production lines each, having acquired modern manufacturing and finishing equipment. The factories are developing new product brands capable of competing in the international markets. Kanu noted that workers presently enjoy improved welfare through regular salary payments, adding that the facilities have been transformed into modern production environments capable of delivering footwear and garments that meet global quality standards.

These salient achievements reflect the resolute commitment of the Otti administration to the provision of modern housing, industrialization, job creation and sustainable economic growth. Governor Otti, has through his well thought-out policies launched Abia on the path of irreversible progress. Under his watch, Abia has gained economic momentum and unprecedented infrastructural transformation. It is the prayers of the good people of the State that Abia would remain on this path of progress in the many years to come.

May Abia continue to prevail!
