ABSU Governing Council Lauds Gov. Otti, for exemplary leadership, milestone achievements

By- Charles Chinekezi.

In a significant expression of gratitude, the Governing Council of Abia State University (ABSU) has publicly commended the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for his visionary leadership, which has brought notable improvements to the university since his assumption of office in May 2023. Dr. Otti, who also serves as the Visitor to the University, has been hailed for his proactive approach in restoring security on campus, resolving long-standing salary issues, and driving transformative changes that have started to reshape the institution. One of the most critical areas of Governor Otti’s intervention has been the restoration of security at ABSU.

The campus, which had faced intermittent security challenges, has witnessed significant improvements under the new administration. The Governor’s commitment to a safe learning environment is vital for both staff and students, ensuring that academic and extracurricular activities can proceed without fear or disruption. By addressing security concerns head-on, Governor Otti has restored confidence in the university’s ability to provide a stable and conducive atmosphere for academic pursuit.

Moreover, Governor Otti’s administration has tackled the long-standing issue of unpaid salaries and allowances, which had become a source of frustration for the university staff. Upon assuming office, the Governor promptly ensured the timely payment of salaries, setting a new standard for financial accountability. In addition, he commenced the settlement of an 11-month backlog of salary arrears owed to university staff, a situation that had caused significant hardship and lowered morale within the institution. The Governing Council noted that this financial intervention not only alleviates the burdens on staff but also fosters a more positive and productive work environment, which is crucial for the growth and development of the university.

Another key milestone under Governor Otti’s leadership is the seamless conclusion of the activities of the Visitation Panel to Abia State University. The panel, which was instituted to review the administrative, academic, and financial operations of the university, has successfully completed its mandate. Its recommendations are expected to chart a new course for ABSU, one that will enhance efficiency, promote academic excellence, and streamline operations to meet global standards. The council expressed confidence that the implementation of the panel’s findings will significantly reposition the university, making it more competitive and capable of attracting the best students and faculty from within Nigeria and beyond.

Governor Otti’s focus on elevating ABSU is in line with his broader vision of transforming Abia State into a hub for education and innovation. By strengthening institutions like ABSU, the Governor is laying the groundwork for a future where education in the state will be synonymous with quality, integrity, and excellence. The reforms being introduced at ABSU could serve as a blueprint for other state-owned institutions, further cementing Abia’s position as a leader in educational development. During its 156th Regular Meeting, the Governing Council also turned its attention to student welfare, particularly the issue of financial aid. The council expressed concern over the low registration of students for the Federal Government’s NELFund Loan Scheme, a critical initiative aimed at providing financial assistance to indigent students. This scheme is particularly important for students from low-income backgrounds who might otherwise be unable to afford higher education.

Recognizing the importance of this initiative, the Governing Council called on the university’s management, parents, and guardians to encourage their wards to take advantage of the loan scheme. The council emphasized that such financial aid could ease the burden of tuition and other related expenses, allowing more students to focus on their studies without the distraction of financial strain. This call to action underscores the university’s commitment to ensuring that no student is left behind due to financial hardship. The council’s concern about the low enrollment in the loan scheme highlights the broader issue of awareness and accessibility of financial aid programs. Moving forward, efforts may need to be intensified to ensure that students are adequately informed about available opportunities and are supported in the application process. This could involve targeted information campaigns, workshops, and closer collaboration between the university and relevant government agencies to ensure that more students benefit from the scheme.

The Governing Council further commended Governor Otti for his recent strategic appointments of key figures in educational and electoral institutions. Specifically, they lauded the appointment of Professor George N. Chima as Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) and Professor Solomon N. Umeham as a Board Member of the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu. These appointments, according to the council, were well deserved and reflect Governor Otti’s commitment to selecting qualified and competent individuals who can contribute meaningfully to the development of these institutions. Professor Chima’s role at ABSIEC is particularly significant, given the critical role of electoral integrity in the democratic process. His appointment signals Governor Otti’s intention to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in the state, an essential component of good governance. Meanwhile, Professor Umeham’s appointment to the Board of the College of Education underscores the Governor’s focus on strengthening educational institutions at all levels, ensuring that they are well-governed and capable of fulfilling their mandates.

In the same meeting, the Governing Council ratified the reappointment of Professor Ogbonna Onuoha as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) for a second two-year term, effective from December 16, 2023. This decision aligns with the university’s commitment to maintaining continuity and stability in its leadership structure. Professor Onuoha’s reappointment is a recognition of his dedication and service to the university, and the council expressed confidence in his ability to continue contributing to the institution’s administrative and academic growth. Furthermore, the Council established an ad-hoc committee to review all legal matters involving the university, with Elder Chibuike Nwokeukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, appointed as Chairman, and the university’s Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as Secretary. This initiative aims to address any legal challenges the university may face and ensure that all legal frameworks guiding its operations are up to date and properly implemented. The Council’s focus on legal reforms is a proactive measure to safeguard the university’s interests and ensure that it operates within the bounds of the law.

In his address to the Governing Council, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Chief Mba Okoronkwo Ukariwo, reiterated the council’s commitment to working diligently to fulfill the expectations placed upon them. He emphasized that the council is dedicated to realizing the goals and aspirations of the state government and the founding fathers of the university. Chief Ukariwo also assured staff members that their welfare remains a top priority, and that the council would continue to advocate for policies and programs that promote staff well-being. Governor Otti’s leadership has thus far set a positive tone for the future of Abia State University. Through a combination of financial interventions, institutional reforms, and strategic appointments, he is laying the groundwork for a more secure, efficient, and forward-looking university. The Governing Council’s commendation reflects the optimism that these efforts will yield lasting benefits for the institution, its staff, and its students. As the university moves forward, it does so with renewed confidence and a shared commitment to excellence.
