Abandoned Agege Stadium: Lagos House Of Assembly Intervenes As House Committee On Sports Summon Contractors, Others
Lagos House of Assembly House Committee on Sports has summoned the contractor in the handling of the renovation works at Agege Stadium, Sports247 reports.
The contractor and others involved in the shoddy handling of the renovation works at Agege Stadium in Lagos State have been summoned to urgently appear before the House Committee on Sports, sports247.ng gathered.
Residents within the stadium’s vicinity, near Agege market and railway station, set the saga rolling when they asked why an arena that was once approved to host continental matches has been left in a dilapidated state.
Incidentally, the said approval by Confederation of African Football (CAF) enabled Mountain of Fire And Miracles (MFM) FC to host their Confederation Cup home matches at Agege Stadium four years ago.
At the same time, the female national team, Super Falcons also played a couple of qualification matches there as well.
However, a sudden and long lull fell upon the arena at the end of 2020, and no respite has appeared in sight ever since.
Our investigation revealed that construction works have stopped at the stadium as the stadium has been shut down for renovation for over three years.
The renovation work was stopped at the stadium over three months when some hoodlums came to drive out workers and the contractor at the site.
In response to the abandonment of the once shinning sport edifice, the Lagos State House of Assembly has chosen to intervene through its house committee on Sports.
We reliably gathered that the committee led by Honourable Abiodun Orekoya has summoned those involved including the contractor to appear before the house.
A largely reliable source told sports247.ng “I just spoke with the chairman of the House Committee on Sports about Agege Stadium”.
“He said he has invited the people involved in the stadium to appear before the committee, ” the source under anonymity .
It is now left to be seen if the sports committee and its chairman, Honourable Abiodun Orekoya, can quickly get to the root of this matter and set things speedily in motion to stem the rapidly declining status of sports infrastructure in Lagos State.
The onus will also be on the house committee to orchestrate a revival of renovation work at Agege Stadium, completion of the upgrade at Teslim Balogun Stadium and embark on long overdue maintenance of Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
Residents within the stadium’s vicinity, near Agege market and railway station, have been groaning complaint about the lack of activities in the stadium which has greatly their economics and commerce.
Sports club owners are also complaining about the hardship the lack of adequate is causing their business as it’s affecting their business while sports development in the state is also suffering .
