A lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic Ngodo Isuochi in Abia State, Dr Onyema Edward, has called on the Federal Government to take proactive steps in adopting artificial intelligence, robotics and renewable energy to address local challenges and reposition Nigeria from a consumer nation to a producer of technology.

Edward made the call in Umuahia on Saturday shortly after being recognised as a Fellow of the Institute of Policy Management Development Nigeria.

He emphasised the need for the establishment of a National Intelligent System Centre to accelerate the development of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics systems, wearable technology, the Internet of Things and data analytics in Nigeria, with a view to strengthening local production capacity.

According to him, governments at all levels should leverage the expertise of Nigerian engineers to develop policy frameworks that will support a sustainable information and communication technology ecosystem, underpinned by strong data protection measures.

“For Nigeria to transition from a consumer nation to a technology producing nation, the government must spearhead the development of robust ICT centres across institutions of higher learning,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of sustained investment in power generation and mechanised agriculture as critical drivers of increased productivity and food security.

“All these policy initiatives and technological investments are essential to Nigeria’s long term prosperity and advancement,” he added.
