The Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has elected Barrister Kalu Kalu Agu as its new State Chairman.

Agu emerged at the party’s state congress held in Umuahia, the state capital, on Saturday.

Other elected officials include Prince Obinna Okey as Deputy State Chairman; Mrs Uwaoma Olenwengwa; Mrs Francess Olisa Ogbonnaya as State Publicity Secretary; and Odilamma Florence Onuoha as Woman Leader, among others.

The new executives were elected through a voice vote following a motion moved by a party chieftain, Chief Longman Nwachukwu, and seconded by Chief Uchenna Okogbue.

Speaking shortly after his emergence, Kalu said the party was determined to win elections in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections. He pledged to unify members and strengthen the party’s structure.

“We will bring all members back to the drawing board and seek genuine peace and forgiveness. We will apologise to those we may have offended because a house divided against itself cannot stand,” he said.

“For us to make progress, we must bring every aggrieved member back into our fold by setting up a reconciliation committee. I nominate Chief Uchenna Okogbue to head that committee, while I will consult other party leaders to select its members.”

Chairman of the Congress Committee, Chief Fredrick Onwe, said the exercise was conducted in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines. He expressed confidence in the party’s growing strength in Abia State.

On recent developments at the national level, Onwe maintained that actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission would not hinder the party’s constitutional activities.

“We duly notified the commission and received approval before the congress. We are confident that developments in the coming days will favour the party,” he said.

He added that the party had achieved internal peace in the state and was positioning itself strongly for future elections.

Also speaking, the State Publicity Secretary, Mrs Francess Olisa Ogbonnaya, said the party was prepared to present credible candidates for the governorship and other elective positions in the state.
