Abia set to extend clean-up exercise to 17 LGAs

The Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Philemon Ogbonna, has said the state will extend the monitoring of the
monthly sanitation exercise to the 17 Local Government Council Areas of the state to ensure total compliance.

Ogbonna who spoke on Saturday shortly after monitoring the February environmental exercise in Umuahia the state capital
commended residents including
traders at Isi-gate, Orieugba market, and Owerri road, where the Traditional Ruler, Hausa Community in Abia state, His Royal Highness, Yaro Danladi was seen directing his subjects, who were desilting the drains for their compliance.

At Ahiaukwu Olokoro market, in Umuahia South, the Commissioner, who addressed traders in the area on the importance of maintaining clean environment, urged them to always comply with the monthly sanitation exercise for the well being of all.

Reacting, the member representing Ohafia South State Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Environment, Mr Mba Kalu Nwoke, described the exercise as encouraging following the heavy turn-out of residents of Umuahia.

Mr Nwoke urged residents to show more commitment to ensure Abia becomes the most cleanest state in Nigeria.

Als the Deputy Director Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA, Catechist Ambrose Jonah expressed joy with the turn-out, and collaboration witnessed among various sister agencies in the state, to make the exercise a success.

A total number of defaulters 44 were arrested during the exercise.
39 persons were prosecuted,
1 discharge as an essential worker, while 4 person discharge due to health challenge.
