By Ebere Uzoukwa, Ph.D.

The ongoing 2024 Aba International Trade Fair, which kicked off on Saturday, November 30, has marked a significant milestone in Aba’s journey to becoming a major business destination in Nigeria and West Africa. Governor Alex Otti OFR, in his address at the opening ceremony, highlighted the city’s immense potential for growth and expansion, and the trade fair’s role in showcasing this potential to the world.

Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, boasts a rich history of entrepreneurship and innovation. The city has been a major center for trade and commerce, with a large market size, skilled workforce, and access to resources. However, over the years, the city faced severe difficulties, including deteriorating social infrastructure, insecurity, and a decline in economic activities. This led to a decline in the city’s economic fortunes, and many businesses were forced to relocate to other parts of the country.

With the new administration in Abia State, led by Governor Alex Otti OFR, the city is witnessing a new era of growth and development. The governor’s vision for Aba is to restore its lost glory and make it a major industrial and commercial hub in Nigeria and West Africa. To achieve this, the state government has invested heavily in road infrastructure projects, security, waste management, social re-orientation, and stakeholder engagements.

The 2024 Aba International Trade Fair is a key component of this vision. The trade fair is designed to showcase the city’s immense potential for economic growth and expansion, and to attract investors who will create jobs, pay taxes, and support the building of a prosperous society. The event features multiple business ecosystems, including renewable energy, civil engineering construction, shoe and garments, real estate, energy and oil services, insurance, banking, and financial services sector, household appliances, and the local automotive industry.

The trade fair provides a platform for businesses to build partnerships, learn about new market opportunities, and showcase their products and services. The event includes business seminars and peer discussions, which enable participants to interact, ask questions, and receive feedback. Governor Otti encouraged participants to explore the city, engage with the local community, and discover the numerous business opportunities available in Aba.

The governor also assured participants that Abia State is safe and secure for business, with drastic security measures in place to prevent criminal activities. He emphasized the state government’s commitment to building a safe and supportive environment for business success, through investments in social infrastructure, security, and urban renewal.

The 2024 Aba International Trade Fair is a significant step towards unlocking Aba’s economic potential and showcasing its immense opportunities for investment and economic prosperity. Governor Otti’s opening address highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship, innovation, and partnership in driving economic growth and development.

As Aba continues to evolve as a major business destination, it is clear that the city has a bright future ahead. The state government’s continued support to businesses and entrepreneurs is crucial, and this can be achieved through initiatives such as business incubators, training programs, and access to finance.

The Aba International Trade Fair has also provided a platform for small and medium-scale enterprises to showcase their products and services. This is a significant development, as these businesses are the backbone of the Nigerian economy.

Furthermore, the trade fair has highlighted the importance of innovation and technology in driving economic growth and development. The event features several innovative products and services, including renewable energy solutions, advanced manufacturing technologies, and innovative financial services.

The trade fair also provides a platform for stakeholders to engage with each other and with the state government, promoting a sense of community and cooperation among stakeholders, and helping to identify areas of need and opportunity for investment and growth.
