The 2024 Lagos Individual Boxing Club Championship kicked off at the Bishop Aggey Senior Secondary School in Mushin, Lagos, with a strong emphasis on grassroots sports development.

The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to using sports as a tool to shape youths’ careers and enhance their boxing skills, preparing them for future national competitions.

Fatodu highlighted the initiative’s role in promoting a sense of belonging within the community, encouraging self-discipline, and reducing social vices.

He explained that the choice of Mushin for the Boxing Club Championship was driven by the area’s boxing tradition, adding that this platform would help harness young talent to represent Lagos at both national and international levels.

The tournament saw intense boxing action, with notable bouts such as Animashaun Sherif’s victory over Yusuf Fawaz and Bodude Olamilekan’s dominant win against Ozumba Tony.

Other winners across different weight categories included Adeleke Lateef, Gbadeyan Mayowa, and Jesugbesan David, among others.

In attendance were prominent sports figures, including directors from the Lagos State Sports Commission and grassroots sports development officers, all contributing to the event’s success.

The championship reflects Lagos State’s dedication to nurturing young athletes and fostering sports development at the grassroots level.
