Nigeria, Ghana Set For Double Football Showdown On Sunday
Nigeria and Ghana will lock horns on Sunday in a thrilling double-header as both nations vie for supremacy at the inaugural WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup final and the first leg of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying fixture.
In the WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup, Nigeria’s Flamingos secured their place in the final with a commanding 2-0 victory over Benin Republic on Thursday night.
The semi-final clash, held at the Ghana Centre of Excellence in Prampram, saw all the action unfold in the second half.
Forward Mary Lucky Mkpa broke the deadlock in the 70th minute, coolly converting a penalty after an earlier miss by Janet Akekoromowei. Peace Effiong doubled the lead eight minutes later, capitalizing on a goalkeeping error to seal the win.
Despite Akekoromowei finding the back of the net in the 84th minute, the goal was disallowed due to a foul on the Benin goalkeeper.
The Flamingos have been in blistering form throughout the tournament, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two in three matches.
They will enter Sunday’s final brimming with confidence as they face a Ghanaian team that demolished Cote d’Ivoire 5-0 in their semi-final clash earlier in the day.
Adding to the intensity of the weekend, Nigeria’s home-based senior men will face Ghana in Accra on Sunday evening in the first leg of the 8th African Nations Championship qualifying fixture, promising a day packed with football rivalry and excitement between the two West African giants.
Fans eagerly await the outcomes as both nations aim to assert dominance on the pitch in these crucial encounters.
