The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, has reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to sustaining an active sports calendar year-round, with a particular focus on creating a vibrant sports weekend economy.

Speaking at the final of the National Carnival Polo Tournament held at the Guards Polo Club, Abuja, Dikko emphasized the potential of polo and other sports to significantly contribute to economic growth and societal integration.

“Polo is a sport that unites all levels of society and creates a thriving value chain,” Dikko remarked. “Events like this, held regularly across the country, can generate employment and drive local economies. While here, I observed over 1,000 people engaged in various activities, from servicing the tournament to selling goods. Imagine this ripple effect across Nigeria.”

Dikko outlined the NSC’s vision for the sports sector, citing a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to build a sports economy capable of contributing substantially to the nation’s GDP.

“Our goal is to turn weekends into sports-centered experiences,” he explained. “We envision Nigerians planning their weekends around sporting events, which not only provide entertainment and relaxation but also stimulate wealth creation and economic growth. Sports facilities should no longer lie dormant; they must be utilized year-round, especially on weekends.”

Dikko expressed optimism about polo’s potential to spearhead this movement, citing its appeal and economic benefits.

The event also witnessed the attendance of notable figures, including former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN).

On the pitch, Max Air Polo Club emerged victorious in the Legislative Shield, narrowly defeating STL (Seyi Tinubu’s club) 4-3. Team FK3 triumphed in the Minister’s Cup, edging Team Musaco 6-5 in a thrilling encounter.

Dikko concluded by stating, “Whether on the field or through the economic activities surrounding it, everyone here is a winner. This is the future we envision for Nigerian sports—a vibrant, inclusive, and impactful sector.”
