Abia Commissioner for transport inspects Abia Electric Buses in Umuahia

The Commissioner for Transport Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, has said the electric Buses procured by the state government is a major step toward a cleaner, greener, and more energy-efficient transportation future in the state.

Ukaegbu spoke shortly after inspection of the highly anticipated fleet of electric buses in Umuahia the state capital on Wednesday.
Ukaegbu noted that the arrival of the e-buses marks a transformational moment in Abia’s transition to an environmentally friendly transportation network.
He added that the initiative aligns with international standards for sustainable urban mobility and reinforces the State Government’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relating to transport, climate responsibility, and clean energy.

He said, “Beyond their environmental benefits, the electric buses are expected to ease pressure on the urban transport system, providing a reliable, modern, and cost-efficient alternative that will serve as a stabilizing force for inter-city and intra-city mobility.
The electric buses, 20 units in the first phase started arriving on Tuesday this week with more coming in on Wednesday.
Also speaking Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Dr. Obioma Reuben Nwaogbe said the development is bound to excite residents, as it reflects yet another fulfilled promise under Governor Otti’s reform-driven administration.
He noted that the fleet may be the first of its kind in the old Eastern Nigeria region if not the entire country, further highlighting Abia State’s emerging leadership in innovative public transportation solutions.
Nwaogbe revealed that additional electric buses currently en route the state, the Governor Alex Otti administration is beginning of a long-term vision for Efficient and Sustainable Urban Mobility for Abia residents.
“Electric buses present a push towards modernization, environmental responsibility, and people-centered governance”, he said.
