Abia: Consolidating Democracy Through Councils Election

Dr. Ebere Uzoukwa, Ph.D

The forthcoming 2024 Abia Councils election, scheduled for November 2nd, presents a unique opportunity for the people of Abia State to reclaim their rightful place in the democratic process, drive development at the grassroots, and ensure that democracy works for all.

As Abians prepare to elect their chairmen and councillors to oversee the affairs of the 17 local government areas, which represent the third tier of government, it is essential to recognize the significance of this exercise.

The local government election is a critical component of democratic governance, as it brings power closer to the people. By electing their representatives, citizens can hold them accountable for delivering essential services, infrastructure development, and socio-economic growth.

This election offers an avenue for Abians to exercise their franchise, choose leaders who truly represent their interests, and shape their destiny.

Governor Alex Otti’s administration has been synonymous with transformative leadership, transparency, and accountability. As Abians elect their local government representatives, it is expected that those who emerge will align with his greater vision for the state.

They are expected to demonstrate a commitment to good governance, transparency, and accountability, ensuring that the dividends of democracy trickle down to the grassroots.

For this election to be successful, it is crucial that political parties adhere to the guidelines set by the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).

Parties should also promote internal democracy, shun divisive politics, and field competent candidates who possess the requisite skills and knowledge to drive development.

Political parties are also expected to respect the electoral process, avoid vote-buying, and refrain from spreading false information or propaganda.

They should engage in issue-based campaigns, focusing on their manifestos and policy proposals for the development of Abia State.

The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) must conduct a credible election that aligns with Governor Otti’s initiative on transparency.

The electoral body should ensure a level playing field for all contestants, maintain impartiality and neutrality, and conduct a free, fair, and transparent election.

Those who emerge as chairmen and councillors must demonstrate good governance and accountability.

They should prioritize infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and socio-economic empowerment.

Regular town hall meetings and feedback mechanisms will enable them to engage with constituents and address their concerns.

As Abians exercise their franchise, they must prioritize leaders who share Governor Alex Otti’s vision for a transformed Abia.

Elected officials must demonstrate good governance, transparency, and accountability, while ABSIEC must conduct a credible election.

The 2024 Abia Councils election is a critical milestone in the state’s democratic journey.

By embracing the imperatives of this election, Abians can create a brighter future for themselves, their communities, and the state at large.

ABSIEC should ensure a transparent and credible electoral process, political parties should promote internal democracy and field competent candidates, Abians should participate actively in the electoral process, and elected officials should prioritize grassroots development and accountability.

Ultimately, the success of the 2024 Abia Councils election will depend on the collective efforts of all stakeholders.

As Abians, it is our responsibility to ensure that democracy works for all, and that our local governments become catalysts for development and growth.
