ABIA 2027: THE JOURNEY CONTINUES:A Story of Rescue, Restoration, and the Road to Consolidation

By-Charles Chinekezi

Twelve years ago, a seed of hope was planted in the hearts of Abians. It was a message that resonated with a people weary of governance failure, institutional collapse, and the misery of living like a conquered population. That message, carried from strategy rooms to streets, markets, community squares, and religious centres, quickly transformed from an idea into a movement. The signal became unmistakable: Abia was ripe for a new political system, one that prioritises the development and welfare of the people over the vainglory of sycophancy and unearned accolades.

After the man-made disappointments of 2015 and 2019, the siege was finally broken in 2023. In a little over three years since Governor Alex Otti assumed office on May 29, 2023, the clouds of despair have parted, the long nightmare has ended, and the light of renewal, restoration, and prosperity has risen over Abia State.

The story of Abia’s transformation is not merely the story of one man. It is the story of a people who refused to waver. For more than a decade, faithful supporters remained unyielding in their conviction that the destiny of Abia was too consequential to be left in the hands of political profiteers and sometimes mere vandals. They resisted the false stories opponents concocted to dampen their resolve. They refused to be intimidated by threats of bodily and economic harm. They demonstrated a strength of character uncommon in Nigeria’s political environment.

Today, that movement gathers as one people, members of a united political family, preparing for the last lap of the first phase of this journey. The transition is clear: from rescue to consolidation.

Honouring the Fallen Visionaries

As Governor Otti formally flags off the 2027 gubernatorial campaign of the Labour Party at Umuahia Township Stadium, he pauses to remember those who gave the movement its enduring identity of resilience, faith, and purpose under pressure. The memories of Prince Otisi Ndukwe Kalu, Mazi Nnanna Ngwu, Mr Eze Alomefuna, Prince Dike, Dr Mike Nwachukwu, Prince Emeka Obasi, Chief Enyi Aji, and Chief Mike Nkwoji remain etched in the hearts of the movement. These visionaries could have gladly made the trip to witness this moment, but they now sleep in eternity. Their courage, passion, and devotion to the long struggle for the dawn of a New Abia remain eternal reminders that the only battles worth fighting are the ones that leave the community a little better than it was met.

The enthusiasm that greeted the flag-off echoes from the farthest communities in Arochukwu and Ukwa to the bustling centres of Aba and Umuahia. This warmth is not merely political rhetoric. It is the genuine expression of a people who have witnessed tangible transformation in their lives.

In just 41 months, the Otti administration has moved the architecture of governance from rescue to consolidation. The evidence is everywhere.

More than 400 different road projects covering over a thousand kilometres have been completed. An additional 82 roads spanning over 200 kilometres are still ongoing. But the remarkable thing is not merely the number or length of these roads. It is the fact that the administration took on projects that were thought impossible only a few years ago.

Port Harcourt Road Aba, Obohia, Ohanku, Uratta, and Old Express Roads lay in ruins for nearly 30 years. Today, the nightmare of yesteryears is ended and the joy of the people has been restored. The Ozu Abam to Arochukwu Road, the Omenuko Bridge, the Uma Ukpai Road from Onuimo to Abia Tower, the 67.4 kilometre Umuahia to Uzuakoli to Akara to Abiriba to Ohafia Road, the expansion and modernisation of Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard, the Nunya to Eluama to Ogboro Road, the Mbala to Umuaku to Ngodo Road, and the recently completed Ohanze to Ntighauzo to Obete to Umuoha to Oberete to AkirikaObu Road all stand as testament to a deliberate policy of extending road construction and recovery footprints to every local government area in the State, with focus on projects with significant social and economic impacts.

The primary healthcare delivery system has been revived and transformed to be more responsive to the needs of the people, especially in rural communities. Secondary and tertiary care institutions are also experiencing a holistic turnaround as public confidence in the system returns.

More than 9,000 teachers have been recruited for public primary and secondary schools. Smart schools have been delivered, and scores of public schools across the State have been retrofitted. The tertiary education sector has not been left out, with investments worth tens of billions of naira on physical infrastructure projects and personnel welfare at Abia State University Uturu, Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Aba, and the Abia State College of Education (Technical) Arochukwu.

Remarkable development feats have also been achieved in security, public transportation, urban sanitation, power and public utilities, public buildings, environmental and climate change governance, land administration, youth development, industry and SMEs support, agriculture, digital economy, arts and culture, and support for women and vulnerable groups.

National and International Recognition

The world has taken notice. Abia State now ranks first in the citizens satisfaction index, first in Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, first in health preparedness index, and stands in excellent positions on the State Performance Index and fiscal performance ranking as published by reputable governance tracking and public accountability institutions. The testimony of millions of Abians living at home and in the diaspora validates the assessment of multilateral institutions who have opened pathways of development assistance for the State.

Governor Otti and his deputy, Engineer Ikechukwu Emetu, have presented themselves for a fresh mandate for three connected reasons.

First, to move the architecture of governance from rescue to consolidation. The foundational work has been done. The next phase requires building upon that foundation.

Second, to institutionalise excellence, accountability, and professionalism in public service, guaranteeing that mediocrity and the antiquated political philosophy of the old order are forever banished from public life.

Third, to extend the development arc through policies and investment decisions that reposition the State for the opportunities of the emerging economic order, especially now that the basic governance and infrastructure challenges that once hampered progress have been significantly addressed.

The overarching agenda is to further deepen the gains of the last four years, strengthen the institutions of public service, and prepare a new generation of leaders to carry the vision forward.

In an uncommon display of democratic maturity, the Otti administration has made it clear that the rascality of yesteryears will have no place in the new order. Opposition parties are not restricted from the use of public facilities once they apply and obtain the necessary approvals. Security agencies have been mandated to arrest and deal decisively with anyone who attempts to obstruct any political group from holding their legitimate activities or deface campaign publicity materials.

This commitment to free and fair elections, even in the face of political opposition, demonstrates the depth of the administration’s belief in democracy and the maturity of its leadership. The Governor’s advice to all parties is simple: restrict yourselves to issues relevant to the people, sell your manifesto, and leave out unnecessary personal attacks.

The 2027 governorship election presents Abians with a clear choice. On one side stands a proven track record of transformation, accountability, and development. On the other stands the risk of returning to the old era of irresponsibility and misery.

In Abia, the era of campaigning with the payment of salaries and pensions, construction of roads, or urban sanitation is gone. These basic hygiene issues have been dealt with. Any candidate unable to raise their campaign pitch to the development realities of the State will struggle to convince any informed voter to take them seriously.

The task for stakeholders in the weeks and months ahead is clear: work collectively to make victory decisive in every polling unit. This is not a time to sit on the fence or make assumptions. Votes matter. They are the most effective power available to all citizens to keep Abia on the trajectory of development through effective governance.

The call extends beyond the governorship race. Abians are invited to elect Labour Party candidates for the three Senatorial seats, eight House of Representatives positions, and twenty-four State Constituencies. A united front, from top to bottom, will ensure the consolidation of the New Abia ethos of service and accountability.

As the sun sets on another campaign season in Abia, the message is one of gratitude and determination. To the faithful supporters who remained unyielding for more than a decade, to the communities that welcomed the message of hope, to the millions who have witnessed transformation firsthand, the Governor extends his deepest appreciation.

The credit for the turnaround witnessed in Abia since May 29, 2023, belongs entirely to the people. They are the real architects of the project. Their enthusiasm and remarkable warmth demonstrate that they are fired up for the next lap of the race.

Together, Abians shall win. Not because it is a right, but for the fact that they deserve a government that is responsive and answerable to them. This is never about entitlements. It is an invitation made in humility, calling every Abian to join the journey of consolidation.

Knock on Every Door

As supporters return to their communities, the instruction is clear: knock on every door and remind the people that there is still a job to complete. Invite them to join the campaign so that together, Abians can conclude the journey that began twelve years ago in faith and optimism.

The February 6, 2027, governorship election is not just another date on the calendar. It is an opportunity to set Abia on the path of irreversible progress through bold leadership, investments in factor assets, and multi-level partnerships for prosperity.

Vote Labour Party for the prosperity of communities. Vote for a better future for children. Vote for the consolidation of the New Abia ethos of service and accountability.

The journey continues. The work is not done. The future belongs to those who show up, stand firm, and vote for progress.

Abia is on the right track. Let us keep it moving forward.

Together, we shall win.
