The Abia State Government has commenced full enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycle operations in designated areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia, citing security and public safety concerns as primary reasons for the move.
The commissioner for Information in the state Prince Okey Kanu, announced this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s state executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
He said the ban, which took effect on Monday June 22, is part of broader efforts to strengthen security, enhance internally generated revenue, and bring order to the state’s urban centres.
Kanu disclosed that under the new directive, any motorcycle found operating within restricted zones will be impounded immediately.

“All motorcycles on commercial, private, courier, or delivery must now be registered under an expanded enumeration exercise that began 18 months ago.
“The Abia State Harmonized Task Force, working with security agencies, will lead enforcement. Riders found in violation face a ₦50,000 fine, payable within 30 days, or risk forfeiture of their motorcycles if unclaimed after 30 days.
“To aid identification, the government will issue colour-coded reflective jackets and vests with unique LGA numbers for each of the three senatorial zones.
“Courier and delivery riders must wear approved vests, available within one week, and all registered motorcycles are barred from carrying passengers.
Kanu equally revealed that the State Civil Service will open its recruitment portal today for more medical officers and consultants for state health facilities.
The Commissioner added that a new, technology-enabled Citizen’s Engagement Centre is ready for commissioning by Governor Alex Otti.
He added that the centre will allow citizens to lodge inquiries and feedback via phone, email, or WhatsApp for swift resolution by relevant MDAs.
The information boss pointed out that the state government in partnership with MTN Nigeria is set to achieve 90% voice and data coverage within 8-10 weeks, extending broadband access to remote areas.
He also stated that the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy will host the Canvas: Culture and Arts Festival 2026 on Thursday, June 25, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, adding that the Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu will be Special Guest of Honour.

stressed that the ban is driven by security concerns, noting that criminal elements have exploited commercial motorcycle
to carry out nefarious activities in Abia and other states.
“This is an overriding public interest decision. “The Governor is being pragmatic in balancing the economic well-being of citizens with their safety and security, in line with Section 142 of the Constitution.”
He noted that similar bans have been implemented in Imo and Akwa Ibom states and warned that Abia would not become a dumping ground for motorcycles displaced from other states.
Acknowledging the economic impact on riders, Uba said the government said it is putting measures in place to cushion the effects, including considering alternative transportation options within cities.
“A comprehensive list of restricted areas will be published via media and transport unions.
“A special Steering Committee and Task Force team will engage stakeholders and the public regularly to review emerging issues”.
Uba urged citizens and the media to support the policy, arguing that temporary hardship would give way to long-term safety and order, as seen with previous reforms like the e-bus system.
“Security is everyone’s business, but your personal security is your responsibility,” he concluded.
The Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma was present during the briefing.
