Akobundu emerges ADC consensus candidate for Abia senatorial district

The Senator representing the Abia Central senatorial district in the
Senate Austin Akobundu, has emerged as the candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general election.

Akobundu clinched the party’s ticket after polling 653 votes as a sole candidate in the election.

The law maker was affirmed as the consensus candidate of the ADC through voice during the primary election conducted in Umuahia the Abia State capital on Thursday.

leader praised members for standing firm despite challenges.

“This has been a journey for the tough and convinced, not for the weak. “You have made today possible. I am overwhelmed by the outpour of support.”he said.

He noted that doubts about the party’s stability proved unfounded, pointing to smooth primaries from polling units to local governments and constituencies.

“Candidates for state constituencies and federal constituencies were elected unopposed, which is a sign of shared purpose and a rejection of rancor.

He thanked INEC for its role as an unbiased umpire and acknowledged the security agencies for ensuring a peaceful process.

He said, “This exercise was witnessed by INEC officials and monitored by security agencies, including the police, DSS, and other services.

“I retired from the Army, so I know what it means to serve quietly so others can sleep with their eyes closed.”

He also thanked the organizing committee and party leaders who worked through the night to ensure a seamless exercise under the directive of the National Working Committee.

He promised to give a full account of his stewardship in the coming months, noting that he joined the Senate six months late but has delivered measurable results in two and a half years.

“I have one and a half years more to account for before we talk about the next term. “Expect more to come your way.”he said.

He announced plans to visit local government areas for familiarization and mobilization, and urged continued support as the party prepares for the general elections.

Members of the African Democratic Congress in the State commended the leaders of the party for their unity and resolve after the conduct of a peaceful primaries across state and federal constituencies.
