Failed Parenting Fueling Insecurity in Nigeria – Activist Johnson Ikechukwu (Ji)

Nigerian media personality and social activist, Johnson Ikechukwu, has attributed the growing rate of insecurity in the country to what he described as “failed parenting.” He made this statement while speaking on his morning radio show on 104.1 FM Umuahia.

According to Ikechukwu, many of the crimes, cultism, drug abuse, and violent acts being witnessed across Nigeria today are often rooted in poor home training and the absence of strong parental guidance.

“Behind every terrorist, kidnapper, or cultist, there’s a story that usually begins from the home. When parenting fails, society suffers. Insecurity is not just a product of bad governance—it’s also a reflection of broken homes,” he said.

He stressed that while the government plays a critical role in providing security and infrastructure, parents have the foundational responsibility to raise children with discipline, empathy, and purpose.

“We can’t keep blaming only the system. Some parents have handed their children over to the streets, to social media, or to peer pressure. We must go back to family values,” Ikechukwu emphasized.

The activist further called on religious institutions, community leaders, and civil society groups to intensify awareness campaigns on responsible parenting, adding that any genuine fight against insecurity must begin at the family level.

“Until we fix the family unit, we’ll keep breeding more problems for society,” he warned.
