MOUAU VC, Prof. Akanwa, not involved in last recruitment exercise, sack of staff – Management

The Management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, MOUAU, has clarified that Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, had no involvement in the university’s last recruitment exercise.

This is coming a few days after some disengaged staff of the University affected by employment exercise called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and re-instate them.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Mr Anyaso Anyaso, and made available to our correspondent on Tuesday the university said the entire employment process, including staff capturing for payroll, was concluded before Prof. Akanwa assumed office on March 1, 2026.

According to the statement, the Federal Government had approved a waiver for the recruitment of 426 staff, a figure also ratified by the Governing Council with a directive to the then Vice-Chancellor and Management to strictly adhere to it.

The statement read, “Ironically, appointment letters were issued to 618 persons. However, 553 were captured on the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System, (GIFMIS) which uploaded only the 426 figures approved by the government and Governing Council.”

The university further noted that the Vice-Chancellor has no access to the GIFMIS platform to remove or alter any name already uploaded.

MOUAU urged members of the public and stakeholders to disregard insinuations being peddled by mischief makers and to rely only on official university channels for accurate information.

“Anybody who has enquiries should channel them to those who handled the exercise,” the statement added.
