Abia Govt. to restore public water supply as Otti announces completion of CKC Water Scheme
Ogbonnaya Ikokwu, Umuahia
Abia State Governor Alex Otti, has announced the completion of the CKC Water Scheme in Aba, saying the facility is ready for commissioning as part of efforts to restore public water supply in the state.
Otti disclosed this on Friday during the October edition of his monthly media chat with journalists in Umuahia.
According to the governor, the resuscitation of the water scheme is aimed at returning to the old days when residents could turn on their taps and have public water running.
He said, “We also have good news that the CKC water scheme is now ready for commissioning. The whole idea is to go back to those old days when you turned on the tap and public water flows. I want to use this opportunity to thank the team that worked on that water project.”
The governor said his administration is pursuing several other milestones across infrastructure, health, power and education.
On road infrastructure, Otti said his government recently flagged off the 3.4km and 3.95km roads in Aba which had been impassable for over 25 to 30 years, as well as the 6.7km Port Harcourt Road project funded by the African Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank and Canadian Climate Fund.
He disclosed that about 51 road projects are currently ongoing across the state, with 21 completed, including the 12.6km Aba Road, slated for commissioning in October/November.
On power and transport, Otti said the Ohafia sub-station is ready for energization, while the Umuahia Bus Terminal has been successfully energized with solar power and has commenced charging for the state’s electric buses. He added that similar charging facilities will be installed at the Aba terminal when completed.
On healthcare, he said out of 277 primary healthcare centres being rebuilt, 153 have been functionalized, with functionalization now tied to solarization.
On eye care, he said over 31,000 screenings have been conducted in 29 centres across the 17 LGAs, with 1,811 surgeries done, including 304 free cataract surgeries for indigent residents.
He said the state has also activated its protocol for Ebola virus following an index case reported by the Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja, with an isolation centre set up at the renovated Mother and Child Hospital, but noted that Abia has no reported case.
On the Nsulu Airport, he said work is progressing, with 3.8km constructed and 2.8km cleared, while stone base laying has commenced.
The governor also celebrated Abia pupils from public schools who emerged world champions in an international debate competition involving over 40 countries, and the first 100 graduates of the Abia TechRise programme, which he said will be scaled to 8,000 beneficiaries.
On fiscal management, Otti said the state’s debt profile dropped from N147.2 billion in Q2 2023 to N48.6 billion as at October 2026, representing over N90 billion repaid, according to the Debt Management Office.
